Shattuckite gemstone jewelry by Chida Gems

Shattuckite

A rare, richly saturated blue stone that most jewelers have never worked with.

Where It's From

Shattuckite was first identified in 1915 at the Shattuck Mine in Bisbee, Arizona, which is where it gets its name. The original Arizona source is long since exhausted, and today the most significant deposits come from the Kaokoveld Plateau in Namibia, along with smaller occurrences in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

How It Forms

Shattuckite is a copper silicate mineral that forms as a secondary mineral within the oxidized zones of copper deposits. As copper-rich groundwater moves through these zones and encounters silica, shattuckite crystallizes, typically not as large individual crystals, but as fibrous, radiating sprays or dense, velvety coatings lining cracks and cavities in the host rock. It's often found alongside other copper minerals like malachite, azurite, and chrysocolla.

Cultural History

Shattuckite's history is much shorter than most stones in this guide, it's a 20th-century discovery, without the ancient civilizations and dynasties attached to a lapis or a malachite. What it lacks in antiquity it makes up for in rarity.

Spiritual & Traditional Meaning

In crystal healing traditions, Shattuckite is sometimes called a "stone of truth," associated with clear communication, intuition, and channeling. It's often used in meditation practices by those seeking mental clarity or a deeper connection to their own inner voice. Because Shattuckite is a modern discovery, it doesn't carry ancient folklore the way stones like lapis or malachite do. Its meanings come from more recent crystal healing traditions.

Caring for Shattuckite

Shattuckite is a soft, chemically sensitive stone that calls for gentle care:

  • Never expose it to acids or harsh chemicals — it will visibly react and can be damaged.
  • Remove before showering, swimming, cleaning, or applying lotions and perfumes.
  • Avoid extreme heat, which can affect its structure.
  • Clean gently with a soft, dry cloth only. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners entirely.
