Chrysocolla gemstone jewelry by Chida Gems

Chrysocolla

A vivid blue-green stone once used to solder gold, now prized in its own right.

Where It's From

Chrysocolla has been found at over 2,700 localities worldwide, with major sources including Peru, the southwestern United States (Arizona and Nevada), and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Our "Parrot Wing" variety is a trade name describing a particularly vivid, multi-toned piece of chrysocolla.

How It Forms

Chrysocolla is a hydrated copper silicate that forms as a secondary mineral in the oxidized zones of copper ore deposits — the same general environment that produces malachite, azurite, and shattuckite, which is why chrysocolla is often found intermixed with these other copper minerals. It rarely forms as individual crystals, instead appearing as botryoidal (grape-like) masses, crusts, or fibrous, vein-like formations, typically in shades ranging from deep turquoise-blue to vivid green.

Cultural History

Chrysocolla's name comes from the Greek words for "gold" (chrysos) and "glue" (kolla). A reference to its historical use by ancient goldsmiths as a flux to help solder gold. It has been valued for its color for millennia, used in decorative objects across many cultures with access to copper-rich regions.

Spiritual & Traditional Meaning

In crystal healing traditions, Chrysocolla is often associated with serenity, communication, and emotional balance, sometimes called a "stone of communication" tied to calm, honest expression.

Caring for Chrysocolla

Chrysocolla is soft (around 2–4 on the Mohs scale) and needs careful handling:

  • Remove before showering, swimming, cleaning, or applying lotions and perfumes.
  • Avoid prolonged sun exposure and sudden temperature changes.
  • Store separately from harder stones that could scratch it.
  • Clean gently with a soft, dry cloth only. Never soak or use ultrasonic cleaners.
