Bumble Bee Jasper gemstone jewelry by Chida Gems

Bumble Bee Jasper

A striking yellow-and-black stone that, despite the name, isn't actually jasper.

Where It's From

Bumble Bee Jasper is found in exactly one place on Earth: the active Papandayan volcano in West Java, Indonesia. It's a genuinely recent discovery, first identified in the 1990s, and no other deposit has been found anywhere else since.

A note on the name: despite being called "jasper," this stone isn't a true jasper at all. True jasper is a form of microcrystalline quartz. Bumble Bee Jasper is actually a volcanic rock made mostly of calcite, with sulfur, arsenic-bearing minerals (realgar and orpiment), and manganese oxides creating its signature yellow, orange, and black bands.

How It Forms

Bumble Bee Jasper forms around fumaroles, volcanic vents where hot gases and mineral-rich fluids escape from the earth. As these hot fluids cool near the vent, they deposit layers of different minerals: sulfur creates the bright yellow, realgar and orpiment create the orange, and manganese oxides create the black bands. Layer by layer, these deposits build up and solidify into the vividly banded rock the stone is known for.

Cultural History

Bumble Bee Jasper is a modern discovery with no ancient civilization ties. It entered the gemstone market only in the 2010s, making it one of the youngest stones in our collection.

Spiritual & Traditional Meaning

In crystal healing traditions, Bumble Bee Jasper is associated with confidence, transformation, and taking action. Its bold, energetic coloring lends itself to that reputation. Because it's such a recent addition to the crystal world, these meanings come from modern crystal healing communities rather than any historical tradition.

Caring for Bumble Bee Jasper

  • This stone is notably soft (its calcite base is much softer than true jasper), so handle it gently.
  • Avoid acids and harsh chemicals, which can react with the calcite.
  • Remove before showering, swimming, or cleaning.
  • Clean with a soft, dry cloth only.
