Black Onyx gemstone jewelry by Chida Gems

Black Onyx

A timeless, solid-black stone with a surprisingly honest history.

Where It's From

Onyx is a banded variety of chalcedony found in many parts of the world, with notable sources including India, Brazil, Mexico, and Pakistan. India in particular is known as a center for natural black-and-white banded onyx.

How It Forms

Onyx forms similarly to agate: silica-rich groundwater deposits layer after layer of chalcedony inside cavities and fissures, often in volcanic rock. What sets onyx apart from agate is the shape of those layers. Onyx forms in straight, parallel bands, while agate's bands are wavy and irregular. Natural onyx typically shows black-and-white banding rather than a single solid color.

Fully solid, naturally black onyx is genuinely uncommon. Most of what's labeled "black onyx" across the jewelry industry today started out as pale gray or banded chalcedony that was deliberately colored black, a technique that's been in continuous use since Roman times. It's a longstanding, widely accepted practice in the gem trade.

Cultural History

Onyx has been carved and worn since antiquity. Roman and Greek craftsmen shaped it into jewelry, seals, and amulets. The Roman naturalist Pliny the Elder even wrote about techniques for altering chalcedony's color nearly 2,000 years ago, which tells you this practice is nowhere near a modern shortcut.

Spiritual & Traditional Meaning

In crystal healing traditions, black onyx is often associated with strength, protection, and grounding, a stone people reach for during periods that call for steadiness and self-control.

Caring for Black Onyx

  • Onyx is a durable stone, around 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, suitable for daily wear.
  • Still avoid harsh chemicals and prolonged sun exposure, which can affect color over time.
  • Clean with a soft cloth and mild soap and water if needed.
